Our School Mission
Nancy B. Jefferson Alternative School (NBJ) provides high quality educational programming to meet the diverse educational and social/emotional needs of court-detained juveniles. We will continue to strive to balance and coordinate our educational focus with the goals and objectives of the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center (JTDC), Cook County Juvenile Court system and Chicago Public Schools.
Our School Vision
"Failure Is Not An Option"
Nancy B. Jefferson Alternative School seeks to become an educational community of learners that blends research-based practices with the principles of effective interventions, to ultimately increase the competencies of and reduce the recidivism rate of court detained juveniles.
About Us
We bring value, innovation and growth to our students
Nancy B. Jefferson Alternative School is a Chicago Public School operating within the confines of the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. Jefferson's educational programs are mandatory to detainees awaiting adjudication by the Juvenile Division of the Cook County Courts. We serve students between the age of 10 and 17 years. More than seventy-five percent of our students are high school age.
We believe all students can learn and it is our professional responsibility to develop, inspire and foster the academic, emotional and social potential of all students.
